What it is

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into or around the brain. The bleeding deprives nearby tissue of normal circulation while creating pressure that can damage brain cells.

What it is

A transient ischemic attack, commonly called a mini stroke, occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is temporarily blocked. It can cause the same sudden symptoms as a major stroke, including facial drooping, one-sided weakness, speech difficulty, vision changes, dizziness, or loss of coordination.

The symptoms resolve on their own, often within minutes and sometimes over several hours, without the lasting brain injury associated with a completed stroke. However, there is no safe way to determine at home whether symptoms are caused by a TIA or an ongoing stroke.

What causes it

A TIA is usually caused by a temporary clot or blockage that dissolves or moves before permanent injury occurs.
